The Key In Everyone's Pocket

Updated: Apr 14

Want to know an experience I bet EVERYONE in this world can relate to?

Can you relate to a time that you have seen another person walking toward a door and your first instinct was to grab the handle, open the door and smile as the people pass through it? MAYBE you’ll even throw in a, “here, let me get that for you…”

Maybe you do it for everyone, maybe you’ve only done it once - either way you can picture exactly what I am talking about.

All the time in this world, we hear about barriers, hierarchy and inequality for everyone to achieve the same opportunities as the person before them.

You know what I say to that? Look in your pocket.

No matter your race, religion, sexual orientation, upbringing or past YOU have a key right now, in your pocket to a door labeled, ‘opportunity’.

Yup. Everyone. I am not going to classify anyone into subcategories because at the end of the day we are ALL humans and ALL humans need doors opened for them through points in our life.

I love self reflection - so of course I am going to ask you to do the same. Think about the last time you opened a door for someone else? Nope, not holding the door open for an old lady kinda-open. This time, imagine a real, unlocking of a door that was otherwise untouched by the very person you’re giving access to…

Everyone always says, “It’s who you know”. I think that statement is 100% true and I have NO shame in believing that. However, more than it is who I know, it’s that the person I know is a door-opener. For as many different occupations and lifestyles the people I surround myself with have - I really don’t have a circle of people in my life that DON’T open doors. Is that saying something?

When was the last time someone younger than you in experience has asked you to open a door of opportunity and you DID?

Better yet, when was the last time no one needed to ask you to open a door? You offered it up without an ask? EXACTLY like the little old lady that is walking to the door - you don’t ask! You just do it! Sometimes, you jog ahead of said old lady in front of you just to make sure that the door gets opened!

So why on earth is a door of opportunity different? Isn’t it crazy that there are people in the world who have an easier time opening physical doors than they do offering up their key to a door they know you could benefit from entering?

It blows my mind how underestimated the power of opening a door is. Every single person, today tomorrow and in the future can actually OPEN a door in someone’s life that ONLY you can open for them...that may be the most powerful superpower I have ever known!!!

For anyone who has opened doors for me in my life (SO many of you) I will always thank you. It is important to know that while I am thankful for the opportunity you gave me access to, I am MOST thankful for the fact that you opened the door in the first place.

When a young boy learns to hold a door open from watching his dad, it is no different than a young professional like myself learning to help people out to any extent I can - because that is what real professionals do. Heck, that is what genuine people do!

So, the next time you jog ahead to open the door for someone passing through see if there isn’t a door of opportunity you could be opening for someone else while you’re at it.

There is ALWAYS someone who will benefit from it. If that isn't powerful. I don't know what is.
